Steve Smith is President of Broadcast Technology Consultants (BTC) providing TV technology services including TV management and engineering on station operations; capital investment planning, budgeting and implementation; and design of new studio and transmitter facilities. Other services include representation on industry committees and consultations on television product innovation, development and marketing.
He is currently Engineering Consultant and Project Manager for Affiliate Implementation and Support for Justice Network, a Diginet with HQ in Atlanta, GA. Product planning and marketing consultations clients have included VoxFrontera, Volicon, DTV Innovations, Business Technology Inc. and Linear Acoustics. Other consultations have included DTV technology for WideOrbit; technology and spectrum consultations to TerreStar during the Sprint/Nextel BAS transition and ATSC representation at for MobiTV on the Mobile DTV Standard.
BTC’s TV facilities services have also included project consulting on new TV studio facilities for WCCO, WDIV, KCRA, KOIN, WAVY, WJLA, and WJXT and project management services for construction of startup TV stations at WOFL-TV Orlando, WJZY Charlotte, WLBJ-TV Davenport, and KSAS-TV Wichita.
Mr. Smith was the VP Engineering/Technology for Liberty Corporation’s 15 television stations from 1995 until 2006 when Liberty Corporation merged into Raycom Media. In addition he was Chief Engineer of KCTV Kansas City, Director of TV Engineering Meredith Corporation, and Director of Engineering and Operations at WCCO-TV and KSDK-TV.
Smith is a graduate of the University of Missouri with a BSEE and George Washington University with a Masters in Engineering Administration (MEA).
Smith is a member of the NAB Labs TV Technology Committee and previously was a member of the MSTV Engineering Committee. Professional memberships include the IEEE, SMPTE and SBE (CSBE). ATSC group participation included committees on TV Loudness Mobile DTV, Distributed Transmission Systems, and Lip Sync.
Smith has been granted one patent for “System & Method for Determining Optimal Broadcast Area of an Antenna.” (Optimal TV antenna electrical and mechanical beam tilt; horizontal and elevation patterns)
